Many people these days are finding themselves in a career rut after spending so much time building up their professional lives, and while the reasons vary, it turns out there are many different ways to cultivate a wonderful resume while feeling fulfilled.

One of the biggest issues many people run into is that they aren’t being challenged. It’s easy to stay with a job that offers predictability and stability, but it’s also easy to become bored and frustrated in an environment that offers nothing new. It’s important to kick yourself out of that rut and open yourself up to new tasks; you just might surprise yourself...and your boss.

Here are some of the best ways to kick start a better 2017 where your career is concerned.

Work outside your comfort zone

Your mind will become dull and passive if you’re faced with the same repetitive tasks every day, so make a point to push yourself outside of your comfort zone. Take on a project that is brand new to you (perhaps a website or a report on an issue that is important to the company), or ask your boss for a different set of responsibilities. Showing that you can take on something bigger and make a success of it might just set you up for a promotion or, at the very least, a way to change up your workday.

Don’t take your work home with you

Except for the very rarest of occasions, it’s best to leave your work at the office. When you’re home, allow that to be you-time that isn’t interrupted by emails, phone calls, or work on projects that can be done tomorrow when you’re on the clock. When you don’t get much of a break, you’ll get burned out real quick.

Make a move that no one is expecting

If you’ve always wanted to try a different career path but have been on the fence, now’s the time! Don’t let your fears about changing things up stop you from trying something new; you’ll never get anywhere with that frame of mind. Sit down and make a list of the pros and cons of your current job, and be honest. If the cons outweigh the pros, it’s time for a change.

Give yourself a makeover

It might sound superficial, but if you’re stuck in a rut with your career, take a good look at how you present yourself to the world. Sometimes a new wardrobe, haircut, makeup, or exercise routine can help you feel more confident and ready to tackle new and exciting things. Dress for the job you want!

Learn something new

You’re never too old to learn something new. Start with a foreign language, or get creative and take up painting. Learning a new skill can help you advance in your career or start a new one, but it can also boost your self-confidence and allow you to see things in a new way. Plus, being able to add something impressive on your resume will leave you feeling like you have something to contribute no matter where you work.

Don’t be shy

It’s especially true for women in the workplace; we are all too often afraid to speak up for fear that we’ll be silenced, not taken seriously, discriminated against,  or viewed as abrasive. Throw off those fears and speak up for what you want; your boss--especially if she’s a female herself--will likely appreciate that you go after what you want.
